The hostel will be constructed at Dhaka Housing Complex of University of Delhi and will be furnished with all modern facilities including energy efficient building, solar water heating and rainwater harvesting.
It will accommodate 500 students as well as will have one provost flat, two warden flats, two resident tutor flats and twelve servants’ quarters.
The construction of the hostel is estimated at the cost of 23.33 crore and will be shared by Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region with 40% and 60% respectively.
The land for the hostel is provided by the University based on UGC norms and it is expected to be completed by the end of September in 2009.
Also there will by a monitoring committee comprising representatives from both MTA and MDONER and DU to monitor the progress construction works to see it completion on time.
Reacting to the arrangement, a PG student from north-east had a different tone by saying “though this initiative is a remarkable one, which aims at providing safe environments to the students of north-east but it will also isolate them further by snatching a chance from them to mingle with students from other parts of the country”.
Nevertheless, considering the complex issues students from north-east are facing in their accommodation in the absence of enough hostels in Delhi University this move is certainly a welcome one; especially for girls. However, residential accommodation has been a major problem for outstation students mostly coming from Assam, Bihar and West Bengal. Even students are paying a hefty amount for a single room space in regions like Vijay Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Hudson Lane and other surrounding areas like Malkaganj and Model Town.
