The veteran music maestro A R Rahman is all set to foray on the small screen by hosting a musical reality show, The Big Band, scheduled to go on air in the first week of December.
The sluggish Doordarshan, branded old-fashioned owing to its outdated programme and presentation in view of colourful STAR, ZEE and other private channels, can think of shedding its old notion as The Big Band launching on Doordarshan may pep up the channel. The programme will be aired in the prime time slot.
The fascinating journey of The Big Band will go through Studio as well as in outdoors as the show will be a combination of travelogue and a reality show.
With the objective of hunt for potential singers in all forms of music, the Big Band show will cover a pan Asia hunt irrespective of physical, ethnic, and cultural boundaries from India to Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.
The winner band will be awarded prizes comprising cash, worth Rs 1 crore and a three-year recording contract with Phat Phish, an integrated entertainment and communications company that is producing the show.
The contract also includes releasing three albums, six music videos, tours and concerts across the globe besides mentoring from leading musicians.
Unlike most of the music based reality shows mushrooming in recent times particularly after Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005- the programme was an extension of the famous Sa Re Ga Ma Pa first aired in 1995 on Zee TV- which looks for sole exceptional voice, The Big Band will look for a music band.
The band interested in participating the show must have 2-10 members with at least one lead singer and requires to submit three tunes. The first tune should be an original interpretation of a popular Bollywood, folk or regional piece.
The second tune must to be based on the band’s interpretation of A R Raman’s especially composed melody for the show that will be released on October 24, and the third tune needed to be any original compositions of the band.
The short listed bands will then be invited for the first stage of audition where the band will be asked by the jury to perform any of the three pieces.
One more interesting move that separates it from contemporary music reality shows is instead of SMS voting and inviting celebrity judges, the producer of The Big Band has decided to invite common people and teenagers to judge the show.
