The External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee in his address to Lok Sabha informed that the Pakistan government has informed the Indian High Commission about the extension of Sarabjit’s death penalty by one month, i.e. till April 30.
Earlier President Musharraf on March 04 rejected the mercy petition of Sarabjit and he was to be hanged on April 01. In March 2006, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had also rejected his mercy plea.
Meanwhile the Ministry of External Affairs has said in a release that Government of India is continuing its efforts to save the life of Sarabjit Singh.
Sarabjit, who is believed to have crossed the Indo-Pak border mistakenly, has been convicted of planting bombs in Lahore and Multan in 1990 that took 14 lives.
Though now India has little option left considering the recent custodial death of a Pakistan national Khaled Mehmood in Indian jail, which provoked Pakistan to give April 01 as the date to hang Sarabjit is now measured as a retort to it.
Pakistan has reacted angrily by saying that though it has released Kashmir Singh another prisoner a couple of days back as a sense of goodwill gesture, Indian has responded it a very inhuman way by handing over the dead body of a Pakistani, who had come to India to watch cricket match and was held for spying.
It was obvious for any common Pakistani and the government of the country to react angrily but any appalling move by Pakistan would only further worsen the Indo-Pak relation.
