ICC Ranking: where do our cricketers stand?

New Delhi, Wed, 15 Oct 2008 M Shamsur Rabb Khan

Where do Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sehwag and Ganguly stand in the latest ICC ranking for Test match and ODIs? Or what are the positions that Anil Kumble, Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan occupy in the ranking? Where does Irfan Pathan figure in the rank for the ODIs?

While master blaster slipped to 24th spot followed by Sourav Ganguly at 25th, Dravid dropped down to 18th. VVS Laxman, on the other hand, moved up the ladder in the ICC rankings to reach the 14th spot. In the bowling department, Bangalore Test's man of the match Zaheer Khan gained seven places and now sits 11th spot in the rankings. But the nearest in the ranking is the dashing opener Virender Sehwag (11th).

Perhaps it is rare occasions that in the ICC ranking, none of our batsmen or bowlers figure in top 10. While Michael Hussey leads the table with 899 points followed by Shivnarine Chanderpaul (2nd) and Kumar Sangakkara (3rd) Muthaih Muralidaran leads the bowlers list with 895 points. In batting list, three Australians – Ricky Ponting (4th position), Michael Hussey and Mathew Hayden (9th position) – figure for their better performance in Test matches.

In the bowling charts, Indian skipper Anil Kumble, nursing a shoulder injury, was not as fortunate as he lost eight places, plummeting from 10th position to 18th. India pacer Ishant Sharma gained a place to be 40th. Among the all-rounders, Brett Lee has moved up one place to seventh.

In ODIs, MS Dhoni tops the list with 793 points, and Sachin on 8th spot with 724 points, 6 points less than Kevin Pieterson of England. In this format of the game, Michael Hussey too figures at 2nd spot with770 points. Other lone Indian batsman, who figure within 20 spot is Yvraj Singh, is at 18th position with 673 points.

No Indian bowlers figure in ODIs bowling list though Zaheer Khan (14th) is at the nearest in upward ranking. Habhajan figures at 24th position, while Irfan Pathan is at 60th followed by Sree Santha at 61st positions respectively. Ishant Sharma is placed at 55th spot.
