Mohali (Punjab), Oct 14 (IANS) Punjab Police are taking no chances with security at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium here, the venue for the second Test match between India and Australia that begins Oct 17.
Close circuit television cameras have been installed and a bomb squad will be on stand by during the match.
A full fledged security drill was held Tuesday and senior officials including the senior superintendent of police, the sub divisional magistrate and deputy commissioner were present.
'The main motive of this drill is to check the availability of proper parking space and to detect the sensitive areas here,' Jatinder Singh Aulakh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Mohali told IANS.
'We want to make this venue an overall safe place for both the spectators and the players. Over 700 cops from various districts of Punjab will be deployed here for the five days. Around 20 officials of deputy superintendent of police or superintendent of police rank will be deployed,' he said.
The second Test match starts Oct 17 and both the teams are expected to reach Chandigarh, around 8 km from here, Tuesday evening.
Security has also been beefed up at Chandigarh. The hotel Taj where the two teams will stay has been converted into a high security zone and security personnel deployed during their stay.
Close circuit television cameras have been installed. A fully equipped bomb disposal squad will be stationed inside the stadium for all the five days, pointed out Aulakh.
'At the four corners of the stadium a medical team and an ambulance will be stationed as well as senior police officials. We have also installed special checkpoints in the area and are keeping a close tab on every outstation vehicle coming here.'
'Police here have got specific security instructions from the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI). In the wake of the recent blasts in various states, the police here has become doubly cautious,' said a police source.
'A media person Tuesday entered the stadium and reached the pitch by breaking the security barricades. After that the entry of anyone without prior permission from the PCA authorities has been barred here.'
