Kohima, Oct.14 (ANI): In an initiative to offer a good transportation service to general public, Nagaland Transport Department is phasing out the buses plying in bad condition from the State capital.

Painted in blue and white colours, these mini buses have been the backbone of Nagaland Transportation service for a long time. And, the latest step has been taken for the first time to upgrade the most popular means of transportation in the state.

A serial checking process has been started from October 1. And, only the minibuses found labeled with "Tested Ok" Nagaland transport department will be permitted to operate.

Nagas have hailed the move to improve local transportation for public welfare. yamo Jami, Motor Vehicles Inspector, Regional Transport Office, Kohima, said: "The main purpose for this exercise is to phase out old vehicles which are not maintained and to give public safety by telling the owners of the vehicle to maintain their vehicles properly so that even an old vehicle if maintained in a good way can ply as a brand new vehicle."

Rajan Singh, one bus driver, said: "I have been driving buses for the last one decade, despite poor road conditions. We appreciate the move of the department. I believe that the public is also appreciating the steps taken."

The phasing out process will be extended to local taxis and oil tankers. This will not only make the traffic commuter-friendly but will also fascinate the tourists visiting the state.
