Match referee plays down Haddin-Zaheer spat

Australasia, Tue, 14 Oct 2008 IANS

Melbourne, Oct 14 (IANS) Indian speedster Zaheer Khan's heated confrontation with wicket keeper Brad Haddin in the drawn Bangalore Test has been played down by match referee Chris Broad.

The pair tangled in what became an animated face-to-face exchange shortly before a rain break late on the third day, raising fears that the acrimony which engulfed the ugly Sydney Test last January may be about to spill over again.

'It's a Test match involving Australia isn't it. There's always a bit of chat,' Broad was quoted as saying in The Australian Tuesday.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting had to intervene and had a talk with Zaheer. But Broad and umpires Rudi Koertzen and Asad Rauf found nothing untoward with the behaviour of the players.

'Nothing was reported to me,' Broad said.
