By Ujjal Borah, Sat, 11 Oct 2008 NI Wire

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will investigate the whole incident of group clashes in Udalguri and Darrang districts of Assam that erupted on Oct 2, 2008. Whether the alleged involvement of banned outfit NDFB is true or false, and who were behind the hoisting of Pakistani flag on Oct 4 in Jargaon and whose vested interests were there in spreading of hatred and violence in the areas- all these things will be cleared after the completion of the investigation. This is stated by the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in a press meet on Saturday in Guwahati.

Gogoi clarifies that the government will take appropriate action against all the miscreants involved in the incident. The Police Officers’, namely the Darrang SP’s, doubtful role will also be brought to book, he said.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has made a visit to the trouble-torn areas of Udalguri and Darrang districts to access the real situation of the people. Visiting the strife-torn areas and interacting with refugees in the Relief camps on Friday, the Chief Minister expresses deep concern over the prevailing fear and hatred among the people. Mr. Gogoi clarifies that the whole situation is under control and that the Government will left no stone unturned to restore peace and normalcy in the region. He stated that there is no report of group clashes in the areas since 6th of October, 2008.

The chief minister admits that the affected people of Udalguri and Darrang have been going through a phase of great distress and despair. “A sense of insecurity is still there. But I have asked the officials and the village defense units leaders to chalk out an action plan for their speedy rehabilitation so that normalcy can be brought to the region and the displaced people can return to their homes”, a sympathetic chief minister Gogoi retorts, who turns 74 today. He maintains that the situation in the region is still tense and the Government must take utmost precaution while dealing with it.

Meanwhile, Gogoi blames the opposition parties for playing the sinister design of the whole episode. He says that small section of miscreants from both sides, viz, Bodo and Minorities, were involved in creating disturbance in the areas and that the AGP and BJP are there to spread mistrust and hatred among the different sections of people. “The recent baseless comments of BJP leader, L.K. Advani in his visits to Assam, and even yesterday in New Delhi, is also misleading and instigated some section of people to create disturbance in the state”, the chief minister alleges. It is worth mentioning that Advani alleged in his speeches that the Gogoi Government has been failed totally to curb the flood of Bangladeshi immigration in Assam which is creating a threat to the identity of the indigenous people of the state.

Gogoi claims that the minority people involved in the clashes are not Bangladeshi migrants. “On the contrary, they are Indian citizens with valid citizenship certificate and land documents”, he says. Gogoi categorically appeal the people of Assam and all sections to cooperate with him in detection of Bangladeshi migrants. He clarifies that the Congress government in the state will not protect the Bangladeshi migrants for the sake of their votes; on the other hand, his government will take stern measures to stop infiltration in the state.

It is worth mentioning that a total of 55 people died, 111 injured and 2505 houses were burnt or damaged in the weeklong ethnic clashes in the two districts so far. Out of the 55 people died, 24 were died of police firing and majority of them were Muslims. A total of 54 villages have been affected badly by these brutal acts of hatred. Out of 2505 houses damaged, 500 were gutted in to fire. Almost 2 lac people have been displaced and have been taking shelter in different relief camps in Udalguri and Darrang districts till today.
