Raipur, Oct 10 (IANS) A 45-year-old woman here was Friday attacked by her neighbour with a sword for allegedly practising witchcraft, the police said.
Shyam Bai, a resident of Math Purena locality of Raipur, was rushed to hospital with multiple injuries after her neighbour Lakhan Singh Netam brutally attacked her with a sword.
Netam has been arrested, said Rajesh Chaudhary, in-charge of Tikrapara police station. He added that Netam attacked her because he held Shyam Bai's alleged witchcraft practice responsible for his family's prolonged health problems.
Shyam Bai was first taken to Dr. Ambedkar government hospital here. She was later referred to a private hospital after doctors described her condition 'very critical due to excess bleeding'.
The Chhattisgarh government has enacted the Witchcraft Atrocities (Prevention) Act in 2005 in the wake of rising crimes against women across the state in the name of practicing witchcraft. According to the law, attacking women in the name of witchcraft is a non-bailable offence and it prescribes stringent punishment for those found guilty
