National, Fri, 10 Oct 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) More than two decades after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the country, a victim has finally got her due after intervention by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Pritam Kaur, whose house in Ranchi was allegedly looted and husband Labh Singh assaulted by miscreants during the riots, had not got any compensation for the damage caused.

She was left out even though her two sons - Iqbal Singh and Manmohan Singh - were given a compensation amount of Rs.450,000 and Rs.220,000 respectively.

'Kaur went to the commission in 2006 saying she did not know whom to approach and what to do to get relief which was due to her. She couldn't even write properly but nevertheless expressed her woes in a letter written in Hindi,' an NHRC official told IANS here.

'After two years of pursuance at various levels, when the commission sought clarification from the additional collector of the revenue branch at Ranchi, Jharkhand, Kaur was given a compensation amount of Rs.200,000 and another Rs.13,500 on account of loss of household goods,' the official added.

Kaur, according to the official, is now based in Amritsar, Punjab.
