No proof that slain militants are from Kerala: police

National, Thu, 09 Oct 2008 IANS

Srinagar, Oct 9 (IANS) Kashmir police Thursday said they had no clear evidence to support claims that two militants killed in a gun battle this week belonged to Kerala except that they had recovered some literature in Malayalam from their possession.

The two terrorists were killed in Kashmir's Lolab Valley in Kupwara district, about 130 km from the summer capital Srinagar, earlier this week. Both belonged to the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

'All we said was that we had recovered some literature in Malayalam language from the possession of the slain militants,' B. Srinivas, inspector general of police (Kashmir Zone) told media persons here.

'This is being analyzed to establish the exact identity of the two militants. As of now, we have no information about any police team arriving here from Kerala in this connection.

'Once we have irrefutable proof about the identity of the two slain militants, it will be immediately shared with the media,' Srinivas said.

The killing of the two suspected terrorists had led to three versions. While officials in Kashmir said the two were from Kerala, intelligence sources in Delhi believed only one was from the state. The Kerala police had denied that any of the two belonged to their state.

Earlier, the police here had declined to comment on whether the two men had any links with the Indian Mujahideen terror group.

'Such a comment would be premature', Srinivas said.
