Washington, Jan 05(ANI): The United States has revealed a major strategic review that will cut its defence expenditures to a big extent over the next decade.
While addressing a press conference at the Pentagon, the US President Barack Obama said that a new major strategic evaluation would slash around 489 billion dollars in its defence spending but maintained that the US will maintain its military dominance over the world.
"Our military will be leaner but the world must know the United States is going to maintain our military superiority with armed forces that are agile, flexible and ready for the full range of contingencies and threats," said Obama.
It is notable that even after cutting down on their defence spending, US will still have defence expenditure larger than that of the next 10 countries combined, The Telegraph reports.
This move by the US is considered as one of the major strategic budge since the end of Second World War and the US is now expected to shift its attention towards the emergence of China as a super power.
Obama highlighted their responsibility towards important coalitions like with NATO and expressed the need to stay watchful in the Middle East region.
Obama also stressed on the falling trend of war and believes that the US had to look out for smarter alternatives which could help them tackle major world problems with more stress on counter terrorism, reconnaissance, cyber warfare and maintaining a nuclear restraint.
"Even as our troops continue to fight in Afghanistan, the tide of war is receding," he said.
He also said that their ties with the European countries would remain crucial in future despite the increasing significance of US relations with the Asia-Pacific region.
"However pressing the growing importance of the Asia-Pacific region is to the United States, the alliance between the US and the countries of Europe is, and will remain, of vital interest to both continents," he added. (ANI)
