Washington, Jan 4 (ANI): Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney scored a narrow win in the Iowa caucuses, edging out former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum by just eight votes.
Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn reported the official vote count at 30,015 for Romney and 30,007 for Santorum. Each candidate pulled in about 25 percent.
Texas congressman Ron Paul locked up third place with 21percent votes, while ex-Speaker Newt Gingrich was placed fourth with 13 percent votes out of nearly 122,000 that were cast.
Texas Governor Rick Perry locked up fifth place with ten percent votes and signaled that he may soon drop out of the race, saying he was headed home to reasses his chances.
Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann finished last among the participating GOP candidates with a paltry five percent, casting doubt about her ability to carry on, The New York Daily News reports.
According to the report, former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman opted to skip the caucuses.
An upbeat Romney congratulated Santorum and quickly shifted focus to the January 10 showdown in the Granite State, where he's expected to receive a key endorsement from Arizona Sen. John McCain on Wednesday.
"On to New Hampshire!. Let's get that job done," Romney said. (ANI)
