Maoists landmines seized in West Bengal

Jhargram, Tue, 27 Dec 2011 ANI

Jhargram, Dec 27 (ANI): Security forces have seized landmines kept inside a village pond by Maoists in Jhargram sub-division of West Bengal.

Eight directional landmines kept inside a pond by Maoists, were noticed by some villagers who had gone to take a bath.

"We don't know who kept those things but today afternoon when villagers came here to take bath they found something inside and then police along with paramilitary force came here and seized those things," said Rabindranath Mahato, a villager.

Mahato said that the Maoists left the village three months ago and the villagers are now leading a peaceful life.

"We don't know since when these landmines were there inside the pond because Maoists left the area three months ago and since then they didn't come here. We are now living peacefully in our villages," added Mahato.

Maoists are active in interior areas of 20 of India's 28 states.

The guerrilla war, waged mostly from the forests of central and eastern India by ultras of the banned outfit, Communist Party of India-Maoist, is seen as the country's biggest internal security threat, say analysts. (ANI)
