Islamabad, Dec 23(ANI): The Pakistan Government and the army seem to be at loggerheads in the wake of the Supreme Court vowing to go ahead with the probe into the Memo Gate scandal rather than calling it off.
Pakistan Prime Minster Yousuf Raza Gilani had earlier alleged that the conspirators were plotting to topple his government, and clarified in parliament that he had constituted the Abbottabad commission to probe who had sheltered slain Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden
His statements have fuelled speculation of a direct military intervention into the scandal.
Though seasoned analysts have sought to dispel rumours of an immediate coup, some predicted that the political situation in Pakistan marked the beginning of an endgame.
Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani's statement acknowledging the existence of a 'memo', the defence ministry's statement admitting that the Pakistan government does not have operational control of the army and ISI, and Gilani's statement saying he would will not accept a "state within the state", as a reference to military establishment, has only stoked such speculations.
Pakistan Attorney General Maulvi Anwar-ul -Haq had earlier informed the Supreme Court that he was not representing General Kayani and Lt. Generals Pasha because their replies contradicted with those of the civilian leadership, The Dawn reports.
The reaction in political circles over the rift between the army and the government have been mixed.
Some nationalists groups called for fresh efforts to prevent military intervention to stabilize democracy.
But Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders blamed the government for the the ongoing conflict. (ANI)
