Srinagar, Dec 18 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, under the Centre sponsored Himayat project, offered over a thousand Kashmiri youth with appointment letters for jobs .

The Himayat project aims to provide employment to more 100,000 youth in the Valley.

The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on Saturday, said his government would continue to work towards generating employment for the educated youth.

"Even today our efforts are to generate as much government jobs as we can. But, it is not possible without encouraging and exploring private sector opportunities," said Abdullah.

Last year, the Valley had witnessed large-scale instances of stone pelting and violence as unemployment loomed large among the Kashmiri youth forcing the state government to take action in this regard.

"Because of this platform I could develop and nurture my passion. I was able to bring out the zest for life and I am very thankful for this opportunity that I have got," said one of the chosen candidates.

A large number of women were also given away appointment letters during the event that was organised in Srinagar.

Union Minister of Rural Development, Jairam Ramesh, who was also present on the occasion also distributed the appointment letters to the selected candidates.

"The step that we are taking today has provided permanent jobs to over 1000 youth and these youth have got jobs in different cities like Srinagar, Jammu, Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla and others. They will work in different fields," said Ramesh.

The project would also provide free training to 100,000 students who had dropped out of school due to lack of money.

In Kashmir, 71 percent of the population is under the age of 35. Of the youth between the ages of 18 to 30 in the Kashmir Valley, an estimated 48 percent are currently unemployed. (ANI)
