Guwahati, Dec 7(ANI): Stilwell Road which connects Tinsukia in Assam and places of Arunachal Pradesh to Kumming in Myanmar and Yunum in China is being given a makeover as it is and considered vital for the economic development of the region.
The central government has taken up its reconstruction under the National Highway Authority of India and will be building a two-lane highway from Jagun district in Assam to Pangsau on Indo-Myanmar border at a cost of 80 crores rupees.
Thirty-six miles of the road falls in Indian territory, 646 miles and 397 miles fall in Myanmar and China respectively.
The road has been closed for many years, and presently, visitors are allowed to pass through the road only thrice a month.
A Roy, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Jairampur, Arunachal Pradesh, said the opening of this link road to China, Burma and India will benefit the people since in terms of trade and commerce.
"The opening of Stilwell Road will give immense benefits to the people of North Eastern Region and the whole country. From here we can export products to Southeast Asian country like China or some other places. If we open this road we can export the product in this way," said Roy.
Stilwell Road, built during World War II was formerly known as Ledo Road and was renamed after American General Joseph Stilwell in 1945. (ANI)
