After the highest award for literature conferred by Sahitya Akademi to the renowned writers from across the country, the highest national award is in the queue to be conferred on the proponents of music, drama and dance on February 26 by the President Pratibha Devisingh Patil.
The President will bestow the celebrated Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship and Akademi Awards for 2007 at an exceptional ceremony on February 26 in New Delhi.
The academy has the onus of preserving the rich cultural heritage of India, which came into existence in 1952 and till now it has been contributing to its development.
The Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna) and Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) are acknowledged as the highest national honour conferred on practicing artists, gurus and scholars, and remain as the most illustrious award for the aspiring artist.
The awards are given in categories including Music, Dance, Drama, Other Forms of Music, Dance & Theatre, and Puppetry, Performing Arts in the Media, Overall Contribution and Films.
The Fellowships and Awards are decided by Academy’s General Council, the apex body consisting of distinguished artists, scholars and representatives of different States and Union territories.
This year the most popular honour of Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna) will be granted to Professor of aesthetics, Dr. S.K. Saxena. The Fellowship includes a citation, an angavastram and a tamrapatra and a sum of Rs I Lakh. This time 33 well known artist will be conferred the Akademi Awards for the year 2007 carrying, citation and a sum of Rs 50,000.
