Stalin's only daughter Svetlana Peters who opposed communism dies of colon cancer

Moscow, Nov 29(ANI): Former Russian dictator Joseph Stalin's only daughter, Svetlana Peters, passed away after battling colon cancer in Wisconsin, United States

Peters,85, who was known internationally by her previous name, Svetlana Alliluyeva, had denounced communism and shifted to the United States in the late 1960s.

Her defection in 1967, which was party fuelled by the ill-treatment of her late husband, Brijesh Singh, by Soviet authorities had sparked off a controversy.he had said she did not believe in capitalists or communists but rather in good and bad human beings, The Daily Mail reports.

She had described her father Joseph Stalin as a 'distant and paranoid man' in her book.

"I switched camps from the Marxists to the capitalists. People say, "Stalin's daughter, Stalin's daughter," meaning I'm supposed to walk around with a rifle and shoot the Americans. Over me my father's shadow hovers, no matter what I do or say," Peters had said in a 2007 interview.

Peters, who was a Moscow University graduate, worked as a teacher and translator in Russia before leaving the country.

She married four times and was last married to an architect Frank Lloyd Wright's apprentice William Wesley Peters. She took the name Lana Peters.

Peters' autobiography 'Only One Year' earned over three million dollars.

Film-maker Lana Parshina had made a documentary on her titled Svetlana About Svetlana, which was aired at the Madison Film Festival in Wisconsin in 2010.(ANI)
