Rahul Gandhi's tirade against Mayawati persists

Kushinagar (Uttar Pradesh) , Sat, 26 Nov 2011 ANI

Kushinagar (Uttar Pradesh), Nov 26(ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi today lashed out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, saying that she does not connect with common people.

Addressing locals at a rally in Kushinagar, Gandhi said: "I have also travelled in a helicopter. The view from above is different and very nice. When I come to your villages and drink your water and ruin my digestion, when I eat your food, when I see your children naked in your homes, then I can see the reality. She (Mayawati) should get off her helicopter and go to the villages of UP, talk to the poor people of UP, then she will understand what is really happening there."

Gandhi also said that the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government's anti-poor policies had affected farmers badly, as their land was acquired across the state without them being adequately compensated for it.

"A strip of land 1000 kilometres long, and 2 kilometres wide, from Gorakhpur to Noida, is being snatched from the farmers. When a rich person sells his land, he gets the market price. In UP, when a farmer seeks his rights, when he complains about not getting the right rates, then in places like Tappal and Bhatta-Parsaul, he is shot at," he said.

He also claims that Mayawati shunned schemes of the federal government that aimed at improving the lot of the poor, such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), which provides poor people 100 days of work a year, in spite of its success in may Indian states.

"We spoke about bringing the MNREGA to Uttar Pradesh. What did your chief minister say? She said that MNREGA would not benefit anyone," he added. (ANI)
