Melbourne, November 24 (ANI): US president Barack Obama carried out the annual presidential duty of pardoning a Thanksgiving turkey at the Whitehouse.
Obama reprieved two turkeys from being slaughtered, one 45-pound bird called Liberty and another called Peace who will now live on George Washington's estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia.
As he performed his seasonal pardoning of a Thanksgiving turkey, he joked that it was something that he could do without needing the approval of the Congress.
"Some of you may know that recently I have been taking a series of executive actions that don't require congressional approval... Here's another one. We can't wait to pardon these turkeys," the Telegraph quoted him as saying on the occasion.
The turkey pardoning tradition dates back to 1989 and was initiated by the then-President George H.W. Bush, it has since been continued by Bill Clinton, George Bush and now Barack Obama. (ANI)
