June 04: Civil Services the coveted prize for all the citizens and the real backbone of Indian democracy is no more the most sought after profession among young Indians. Students after completing their intermediate now opt for technical education and management courses, and economic boom in the private sector has been inviting more than the interest levels.

Students disinterest towards Civil Service as a career may be of because of several reasons. With economic liberalization the monopoly of private sector as well as government has declined and in turn has generated competition in every field. Private sector especially IT has produced lots of job opportunities with handsome salaries that act as a bait for young Indians.

More particularly in the IT sector where salary package is soaring up day by day with increasing number of opportunities, it is natural for the youth to choose their future in IT. Government jobs don’t seem to be interesting anymore. People who show the zeal, work for the people, the society and the country as a whole are the only interested candidates. On the other hand, the new generation wants action and adventure, want to explore more and are more into tech world rather than sticking to the conventional institutions and values. Also the rapid development in this field and the growing Indian economy has simply multiplied the probabilities of exploring new fields.

After independence, the founding fathers of the constitution understood the need of effective administrative departments in governing a large democracy like India. One more reason of its being a prestigious field was its setup which was originally laid down by the British experts during their Raj. But keeping in mind multi party system and larger interest of the country it was important to keep the bureaucracy politically neutral and professionally competent.

Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel’s vision of a strong administrative structure did the finest and stood firm in developing a strong India during its early independence days. Till now it also holds credibility, but to some extent with vested interest of politicians and political parties, it lost that uniformity in administration both at centre and state level.

As MPs and MLAs are directly elected representative of people with high legislative power, it becomes difficult for an IAS or IPS officer to act against them. A district collector who is an IAS officer can not act against the political parties in power. This is really a shame in a service as the process of being an IAS or IPS officer took a long time with hard work of dedication and determination.

The present generation thinks of their country as big and different but with a changed perspective. Students after completing school go for their technical education just because they find more opportunity to earn money with a luxurious life. Again we all know that an officer in IAS/IPS cadre hold much respect and power but less money. But the most important thing is that no one after having a good educational qualification will prefer to act like a puppet and be directed by some silly politicians as there is high level of political interference.

Take into consideration some of the recent cases in which high profile police officers are involved in crimes and corruption. These images of bureaucrats along with those pay packets in private sectors are some of the prime reasons behind the students changing preferences. Still there are officers who working with pride, fearlessness and dedication but that can now be counted on fingertips. To find solutions for this crisis seems really difficult but it needs to be addressed largely for the betterment of the country.
