Delhi, Tue, 10 Apr 2007 NI Wire

April 10: You want to visit Internet cafe or make an international telephone call from famous tourist destination of Rajasthan, then better keep your identification papers ready. Taking cognizance of the reports of ‘suspicious’ people using e-mail and phone calls to send secret information outside the country, authorities in Jaisalmer directed owners of internet cafes and PCOs to maintain a register for each and every customer.

Internet cafe and PCO owners have been ordered to maintain a record on all international calls and internet messages sent after reports of ‘suspicious’ people using e-mail and phone calls to send secret information outside the country.

Under a recent order by the district collector and magistrate Krisnakant Pathak, a register should be maintained for each and every international call and e-mail message sent from the district, including the caller's name and address.

The neighbouring tehsils like Pokhran and Fathehgarh will also need to oserve the orders. It was in the Pokhran, were India showcased its nuclear capability by testing three blasts on 11 May and two on 13 May 1998. Since then the area is regarded as a highly sensitive area in the country.

Jaisalmer is the latest addition. It has been made mandatory for callers to register themselves before making use of internet cafes and PCOs. The decree is applicable in the rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir, North eastern states besides metropolitan cities of the country especially New Delhi.

The order in other areas and regions may not be as strict as it is in Jaisalmer, where the serial number, telephone number, data, caller's name and the name of the person who is sending messages through e-mails will be recorded in the register.

Routine check of the registers will be carried out by the police and an officer of Sub-Inspector or Sub Divisional Officer rank will be authorized. Sources told Newstrack India that the legal proceedings will be initiated against people who are not complying with the order.
