National, Mon, 06 Oct 2008 IANS

Srinagar, Oct 3 (IANS) The hardline and moderate factions of the Hurriyat here Friday decided to go ahead with their proposed Oct 6 march to Lal Chowk in the Jammu and Kashmir capital in defiance of restrictions imposed by the government.

The co-ordination committees of both the Hurriyat groups met here to finalize the arrangements for the 'Lal Chowk Chalo march'.

Muhammad Yasin Malik, chairman of the Pro-Freedom Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), chaired the meeting of the joint co-ordination committee, which was attended by five members each from both the hardline and the moderate groups.

A press statement released after the meeting said: 'The march to Lal Chowk on Oct 6 will be held despite possible restrictions imposed by the government.'

A supervisory committee of 15 members would oversee 1,000 volunteers, who would ensure discipline during the march, the statement said.

'If the authorities impose curfew restrictions, we will defy the curfew through all possible peaceful means,' the statement said.

The march to Lal Chowk would remain 'totally peaceful' and no provocative slogans or actions would be allowed by the volunteers of the co-ordination committee.

Meanwhile, the district magistrate of Srinagar has imposed restrictions under section 144 of the criminal procedure code throughout the district for a period of one month from Friday.

An assembly of five or more people is deemed as unlawful under the orders.
