Soon, car that makes driving safer by barring incoming calls, texts

Melbourne, Sun, 06 Nov 2011 ANI

Melbourne, Nov 6 (ANI): Young drivers on the road will be barred from accepting phone calls or reading text messages thanks to a new in-car safety system.

Developed by motor company Ford, 'MyKey' works by blocking incoming phone calls and text messages, diverting the calls to voicemail and saving text messages for viewing later, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The MyKey 'Do Not Disturb' features also allows the car owner to keep a tab on the vehicle's top speed and limit the audio volume.

MyKey will be first introduced in Europe and the US next year in Ford Fiesta before being extended to other models and markets.

Ford Australia spokesman Justin Lacy said the MyKey technology is not yet available in current Ford models.

"But this is something that rolls out over time," Lacy said.

"We don't have a specific timetable for this and of course it depends on what car models it can be fitted into. Certainly it's something to which we would give a lot of attention when it becomes available," he added. (ANI)
