Ludhiana, Thu, 03 Nov 2011 ANI

Ludhiana, Nov 3 (ANI): The creche and nursery school set up by the authorities of a women's prison in Ludhiana is providing education for children of prisoners to become educated and learned as any other child in the society.

Earlier, the school was being run within the premises of the jail. However, in an endeavour to provide an appropriate environment for the children of the prisoners, the authorities took the initiative and got a new building constructed and it was inaugurated for the 26 children of women inmates.

Superintendent of women jail, Snehjyot Dhawan, said the school was set up for providing moral education and schooling to children who were staying in prison with their mothers.

"This is a creche and nursery school, which has been started for the children of the jail inmates. These children stay with their mothers in the jail, as nobody else is there in the family to take care of them; so they stay in jail with their mothers and they have not committed any crime. So, to provide them moral education and schooling, this is the first school in Punjab started by the prison department and is just for the children of the prisoners," said Dhawan.

The women prisoners are grateful to the jail authorities.

"This is a good step and children have learnt a lot in the school. We are happy with the start of this school. My daughter has been studying in this school for the last two years and is getting a good platform for her career," said Indu Bala, a woman prisoner.

The prisoners added that earlier due to the lack of infrastructure, little children were forced to study inside the jail, but now they have a school-like environment and are getting formal education.

Children were also being provided with books and food from the welfare fund of the prison. (ANI)
