Agartala, Oct 29 (ANI): Young farmers in Tripura are increasingly taking to floriculture since it is helping them make more money than from growing vegetables.

Farmers like Biswajit Banik cultivate flowers like gladiolus, marigold and chrysanthemum, tuberose, orchids and anthodium in his small farm.

Five years ago, Banik, after completing his graduation was unable to find a job nd had to work as a laborer in farms to earn a livelihood.

It was then that he decided to grow flowers in his own farm and since not looked back.

"When I saw my fellow villagers making good money from floriculture with governments help, I also decided to join them, as I did not have any government job. Now I am totally dedicated to this profession and earn my livelihood from it. The government had also arranged for my training in floriculture at Bangalore," said Banik.

Floriculture is emerging as a big business in Tripura as the demand for flowers both within and outside the state is growing.

With the support of state hundreds of unemployed youth have taken up floriculture.

Under its technology mission, the state has been regularly organizing training sessions for the youth to help them cultivate flowers in a systematic way and scientific way.

"I started with a small plot but now I am growing flowers in a big area. At present my family lives on my earnings from floriculture. Several people in this village have benefited from the business. Many people have got employment in the flower fields while the women folk also earn money by making garlands," said Ratan Debnath, a floriculturist.

Tripura offers immense scope for production of a wide variety of flowers as it is endowed with fertile soil, abundant moisture and sub-tropical climate.

The state government is also making all possible efforts to promote floriculture as flowers fetch good money in markets across the country and abroad as well. (ANI)
