London, October 29 (ANI): Prince William and Kate's first-born child will succeed to the throne even if she is a girl, leaders of the 16 countries that recognize the British monarch as head of state have agreed.
British Prime Minister David Cameron won the backing of Commonwealth leaders in repealing a centuries old law that ruled that males must succeed as monarch even if they are not the first born, dated back to 1688.
"This is something of a historic moment," the Daily Express quoted Cameron as saying at a meeting of Commonwealth heads of government at Perth in Australia.
This change will apply to all the 16 countries where the Queen is head of State.
The other rules to be changed include the ban on marrying Catholics and seeking the consent of the monarch for marrying the partner of one's choice.
"Attitudes have changed fundamentally over the centuries and some outdated rules just don't make sense to us any more," Cameron said.
"The idea that a younger son should become monarch instead of an elder daughter simply because he's an heir or that a future monarch can marry someone of any faith except Catholic - this way of thinking is at odds with the modern countries we have become," he added. (ANI)
