NHRC notice to Maharashtra on violence against migrants
The recent violence in Maharastra state targeting the North Indians has become a major human right concern after the migrants were beaten badly and driven out of their home. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a clarification from the state authority following administration’s failure to take any stern action against the culprits.
The NHRC notice to Maharashtra Chief Secretary is based on a press report according to which a person working in Nasik has fled with his family after beaten up badly by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) supporters.
NHRC took notice of a report published in daily newspaper on February 14, 2008, which said that a large number of people from Bihar had fled due to terror and violence by MNS activists and wrote about Sanjiv Singh a migrant worker who confessed that his family members were attacked and women were molested by the MNS workers.
The MNS workers threatened them of dire consequences if the migrants continue to live in Maharastra. Along with Sanjiv another person called Rehman Bhai was also threatened by MNS workers.
The country’s premier human right watch dog has taken the whole issue as matter of serious concern on the part of human rights. In its notice sent to Chief Secretary of Maharashtra the commission has given a time of four weeks.
MNS worker tired against the migrant workers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh became the most highlighted issue in recent days. MNS Chief Raj Thackeray has alleged the migrant’s worker for creating disarray in Mumbai and for snatching Maharashtrian rights in respect of employment.
The state machinery has been criticised for inability to take timely action.
