Advani flays government for rampant corruption

Kolkata, Fri, 21 Oct 2011 ANI

Kolkata, Oct 21 (ANI): Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K Advani has said that everybody has lost faith in the ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, as it failed to take steps to root out corruption.

Advani, who is on an over a month long nationwide tour against corruption, said a number of scams, including the telecom scam, the Commonwealth Games scam, the Adarsh Society housing scam have astounded people and they have lost faith in the government.

"Today, the entire country is reeling under corruption and, it is all due to the misappropriations in the UPA Government. Everyone in the political arena as well as a common man has lost belief in the government, he added.

Emphasizing that the scams and scandals have shocked everyone, Advani said: " My tour is also in relation with the corruption in the country and black money stashed in foreign banks abroad."

Advani further accused the UPA Government of buying out votes in the 2004 general elections.

"In 2004, the UPA used the power of money to buy votes. I say with full confidence that if the Congress party won even after the withdrawal of support from Communist parties, it was because of them indulging in buying votes. They were all over looking for lawmakers and fixing prices for votes as much as Rs. 10 crore and 20 crore. They said that they would go to any extent to purchase votes and, that is exactly what they did," said Advani.

Further taking a dig at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Advani wondered why she was silent on the corruption in the central government.

"I know Mamataji for years. She is very outspoken. Whenever we did anything wrong, she said that unequivocally. But I see nowadays she does not say anything on the central government's corruption," Advani said. (ANI)
