Delhi bids farewell to Appu Ghar

New Delhi, Mon, 18 Feb 2008 Binita Tiwari

The jovial mascot Appu appeared sad as Delhi said goodbye on Sunday evening to Appu Ghar, the amusement park which since 24 years had been captivating the romance by being an Indian Disneyland for millions of children and adults.

Thousands of people turned up across the city, filled with nostalgia to take the last rides in this amusement park with their children and spouses to recollect the memories and to give their children a new high which will be missed in days to come.

The first of such amusement park was inaugurated on Indira Gandhi’s birthday on November 19, 1984 by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi under the guidance of International Amusement Limited at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

The park closure came after the expiry of the land lease between the International Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) and International Amusement limited in 1999. Several failed attempts were made to revive the lease and finely Supreme Court ordered the closure of this entertainment park.

The area where Appu Ghar once stood proud will be used to build Supreme Court premises and for building Delhi Metro station.

Appu Ghar derived its name from the mascot of 1982 Asian Games and had been adding the adventure and thrills with Columbus, My Fair Lady, Roller Coastar Ride, Bhoot Bangla, Cable Cars, Giant Wheel and seasonal Oyster Park to get a feel of snow laden mountains. Cool splash, Rain Dance to beat the scorching heat become very popular among the college goers and kids.

The last day at Appu Ghar was not only emotionally charged but those who dedicated their whole life earning bread by selling small things will have to think about new mode of earning.

As the fate of 250 of its employees hangs in uncertainty, there has been no confirmation to provide lands in other part of Delhi to shift the park which the whole Delhi will be waiting after bidding farewell to Appu Ghar.
