Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 1 (IANS) Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy Wednesday said the proposed protest march to parliament by Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan is 'just meant to cover up for his faults and poor governance'.
'He should march to his party headquarters here because ever since his tenure began, governance has been affected due to inter-party and intra-party squabbles. There has been no collective responsibility by his cabinet,' Chandy told reporters here.
Earlier this week, it was decided by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) state committee that Achuthanandan will lead a protest march Oct 17 outside parliament over the state's various demands being 'ignored' by the Manmohan Singh government.
While Achuthanandan had said that he is proud to lead the march, Chandy said before undertaking the protest march he should come out with why he is doing so and what has not been given to Kerala by the central government.
'Since this Left government took over in May 2006, the centre has sanctioned projects worth Rs.31,503 crore (Rs.315 billion). The only thing that still has not come is an Indian Institute of Technology, but instead of that the central government allotted a space institute, only the fourth in the world,' said Chandy.
Achuthanandan should say why he has not seriously implemented several central government schemes like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), Chandy said.
'A state government report on this shows that compared to other states its implementation is appallingly poor. During 2007-08, a mere 33 days of work has been given while it should have been 100 days. Blaming others for the Left government's fault is an old story,' said Chandy.
This would be the first time ever that a chief minister from the state would stage a protest march outside parliament.
