Srinagar, Oct.6 (ANI): Senior sources of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday said that no pressure was being put on the second witness not to depose in a case resulting in the death of a National Conference (NC) worker.

Police sources said that the witness, who is residing in the state's Ganderbal District, was acting on his own and independently, and reports in the media of him being coerced, were baseless and without foundation.

The Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Naren Vohra, has demanded a complet report on the circumstances leading to NC worker Mohammad Yousuf's death.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is facing a political storm and calls to resign over the death of Yousuf, who died allegedly in police custody after two fellow party workers had accused him of taking Rs.1.18 crore from them for getting them berths in the Legislative Council.

According to the government version, the accused was summoned to the camp office of the chief minister where he was confronted with the allegation about taking the money.

The statement from the J and K Police came hours after People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti said that Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah's defence of his son and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in connection with the death of a National Conference activist was untenable and unacceptable.

Describing Farooq Abdullah as a senior and venerated leader of the state and country, Mufti said his statement was an aberration and a joke on the masses, or more specifically on supporters of his party.

She was reacting to Abdullah's lashing out at the People"s Democratic Party (PDP) for holding Omar Abdullah responsible for the custodial death of National Conference (NC) worker Syed Mohammad Yousuf.

Abdullah termed the whole controversy a political stunt.

Abdullah said: "We have nothing to hide. It is a political stunt. They (PDP) want power that is why they are leveling charges against us."

"They don't want the NC-Congress government to stay. They want the National Conference to disappear. We are running a coalition government in the state, but the attack has only been on our party, not the Congress," he added

Defending his son, Farooq said: "It was Omar, who on his own, ordered a judicial inquiry. Truth will come out in the judicial inquiry."

Mufti, on the other hand, said: "It is not the first time that we have taken up this matter. They (National Conference) are hiding the truth. I am worried how this government will handle governance. This is not the PDP's personal demand. CCTV footage shows the real thing. There is no accountability."

"If such things happen in the CM's (Chief Minister's) house, then, how can people be safe in the state. We need the thorough investigation We are first ones to draw attention towards the massive corruption in the state. There is lack of law and order," she added.

Mufti also questioned the state government's contention of a judicial inquiry being ordered into the death of National Conference worker Syed Mohammad Yousuf.

Regarding the sensational Srinagar sex scandal of 2006, Mufti said: "I will not speak about the sex scandal." (ANI)
