Washington, Sept 28 (ANI): A new study has indicated that half the world's adults - 2.3 billion people - will have urinary tract symptoms by 2018, an increase of 18 percent in just 10 years.
It also found that other issues like incontinence will increase, with South America, Asia and the developing regions of Africa particularly affected by the conditions.
"Our study suggests that urinary and bladder symptoms are already highly prevalent worldwide and that these rates will increase significantly as the population ages," said lead author Dr Debra E Irwin from the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina, USA.
Irwin and her colleagues calculated the numbers and prevalence of individuals aged 20 years plus affected by each condition in 2008, using data on gender and age from two key sources - Worldwide and regional population estimates from the US Census Bureau International Data Base.
They found at least one lower urinary track symptom will affect an estimated 2.3 billion people between 2008 and 2018 -- with the biggest increase in Africa at 30 percent, followed by South America at 20.5 percent, Asia at 20 percent, North America at 16 percent and Europe at 2.5 percent.
"We believe that our study underlines the clear and urgent need to improve the awareness, prevention, diagnosis and management of these conditions," said Dr Irwin, who worked with co-authors from the USA, UK and Sweden.
