Preeja wins second gold for India

India’s long distance runner Preeja Sreedharan pocketed the second gold medal for India by claiming the 3000m race after clocking a record time of 9:12.26 in the third Asian indoor athletics championships being underway at the Aspire Academy here on Friday.

Compatriot Kavita Raut claimed the silver with a time of 9:26.01 while Bahrain’s Sara Yaqoob Bakheet got bronze in 9:40.47. India has so far clinched two silver and bronze medals each to take the medal tally to eight.

Chatholi Hamza ran his personal best of 3:41.18 but had to content only with the silver in the men’s 1500m but had the pleasure of timing the qualifying standard (3:43.00) for the World Indoor championship. Doha’s Thamer Ali won the gold medal by clocking 3:40.86 while his teammate Kamal Abubaker (3:42.50s) won the bronze.

Triple jumper Amarjeet Singh also added silver to India’s tally by leaping a distance of (16.26m), keeping behind to Kazakhstan’s Roman Valiyev (16.32m) while Mandeep Kaur and V. Leelavathi won bronze medals in the women’s 400 metres and 600m hurdles respectively.

Sinimole retains title to qualify for World indoor championships

Meanwhile on Thursday, Sinimole Paulose defended her 1,500m title and with the win also qualified for the World indoor championships after opening India’s golden tally. Sinimole clocked a record time of 4:15.42 bettering the World indoor championship qualifying mark of 4:16.00.

Sinimol Paulose created a new championship record of 4:15.42 seconds as she erased the old championship record of 4:18.29s that she herself set in the last edition in Thailand.

India’s Sushma Devi, shelved a strong challenge put up by Sara Yaqoob to win the silver in 4:22.78.

India’s ace long-jumper, Anju George once again missed the gold medal in the championship that too by a distance of only one centimeter. She jumped 6.38m to remain behind Chinese Chen Yaling who won the gold with 6.39m. Anju had won the silver in the previous edition also.
