Obama welcomes release of US hikers jailed in Iran since 2009

Washington, Thu, 22 Sep 2011 ANI

Washington, Sep 22(ANI): United States President Barack Obama has welcomed the release of two American hikers who were detained in Iran for over two years.

"I welcome the release of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal from detention in Iran and am very pleased that they are being reunited with their loved ones," Xinhua quoted Obama, as saying in a statement.

Obama further said the US is "deeply grateful" to Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, the Swiss government, and others who have worked to secure the release of the two Americans.

Shane Bauer and Joshua Fattal, both 29, were released on Wednesday after spending over two years in prison on charges of illegal entry and espionage since they and a companion, Sarah Shourd, were arrested on the border between Iraq and Iran while hiking in the mountainous region.

Bauer and Fattal denied being spies, maintaining that if they crossed the Iranian border, they did so accidentally while hiking with Shourd. (ANI)
