China says US arms sale to Taiwan will cause 'severe obstacles' in military-to-military exchanges

Beijing, Thu, 22 Sep 2011 ANI

Beijing, Sept 22 (ANI): China has said that the latest US decision to upgrade the existing fleet of Taiwan's F-16 US-built fighter planes and sell arms to defend itself, would create severe obstacles in the normal military-to-military exchanges of the two countries.

"Rather than working with China to consolidate and expand the positive growth of bilateral military ties, the United States again announced its plan to sell arms to Taiwan, which will create severe obstacles for normal military-to-military exchanges," Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said.

Geng's made the remarks as the US recently notified Congress of its latest decision to sell 5.85 billion dollars worth of arms to Taiwan, including an upgrade of Taiwan's 145 F-16A/B fighter jets, Xinhua reports.

According to the report, the fresh arms sale announcement comes 20 months after Washington's decision in January 2010 to sell a nearly 6.4-billion-dollar arms package to Taiwan, which according to China is a part of its territory.

Following the last sale, China cut off some military exchange programs with the United States, the report said.

"In recent years, China-U.S. military relations have never broken the vicious circle of 'development-stagnation-redevelopment-restagnation," Geng said, pointing out that the US planned selling arms to Taiwan regardless of China's repeated resolute opposition. He said the US' incorrect decision to sell arms to Taiwan will unavoidably undermine China-US military relations.
