New Delhi, Sep 21 (ANI): Chief Election Commissioner Dr. S.Y.Quraishi on Wednesday said veteran social activist Anna Hazare's demand for 'Right to Recall/Reject' is an 'impractical proposition' for a country like India.
Qureshi said that the magnitude of elections is huge in this country and therefore it would be a very difficult job to undertake.
"Through media reports I have heard that Anna Hazare and his team members wish to meet me and discuss, so what they want to discuss we would see. According to us, 'Right to Reject' is a difficult proposal. Instead, voter education should be enhanced and electoral reforms improved so that criminals are disallowed from contesting elections," Qureshi told media persons here.
"Also, money power needs to be controlled. It is important that good candidates are nominated in the first place and we want people to come out in large numbers to vote for the best candidates," he added.
Qureshi said that the focus, instead, must be to undertake electoral reforms and prevent the candidates with criminal background to contest elections.
"An addition like Right to recall is an impractical proposition for such a large country like India. 10-20 people would come out and ask for their candidate's removal. In our country, someone gets elected with a victory of lakhs of votes so it would not be an easy task to regularly keep a tab on this," said Qureshi.
"It is important that we focus on cleaning up the election system, where candidates with criminal records are disallowed from nomination. That would be a better step than 'Right to Recall' because otherwise we would keep having elections in India," he added.
Team Anna during their protest last month for an effective Lokpal Bill had said that their next campaign would focus on 'Right To Recall/Reject'. (ANI)
