Chennai, Sep 21 (ANI): Villagers protesting against the against the set up of the Koodankulam nuclear power project in Tamil Nadu have agreed to call off their fast following assurances from Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
The decision to end the fast came after a five-member delegation met Jayalalithaa here.
Jayalalithaa had earlier met the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh's, emissary V. Narayanaswamy, who updated her about the government's efforts to ensure safety at the nuclear plant.
Jayalalithaa also indicated that she has called a meeting of her cabinet to discuss the events of the last eleven days.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, V. Narayanaswamy, had earlier in the day met the agitators and asked them to end their stir after revealing that the plant met international safety standards.
"The honourable Prime Minister directed me to visit Koodankulam, where people are sitting on a hunger strike and also to meet the honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Accordingly, I went to Koodankulam yesterday and went to the place where people are sitting on a hunger strike and heard their views," Narayanswamy told mediapersons after the meeting.
"I have met the honourable Chief Minister and explained to Honourable Chief Minister about the discussion I had with people, who are sitting on the hunger strike. The honourable Chief Minister also conveyed about a certain message to be told to honourable Prime Minister. I will convey the message just now," he added.
The local population and fishermen in and around Koodankulam had been protesting against the project. Around 100 persons were sitting on an indefinite fast for the past nine days, demanding the scrapping of the project.
Protesters feared that a Fukushima type of situation could be repeated in the coastal town in case of tsunami or an earthquake. (ANI)
