Tokyo, Wed, 21 Sep 2011 ANI

Tokyo, Sept 21 (ANI): Japan's largest island of Honshu has been hit with a strong typhoon on Wednesday and is expected to make its way across the archipelago, with the Japan Meteorological Agency calling for "the greatest possible vigilance."

Typhoon Roke landed near Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, at around 2 pm (local time), bringing strong winds and heavy rain to vast areas of western to northern Japan, the Kyodo news agency reports.

Reports suggest that by 3pm (local time), it was heading toward the Tohoku region in northern Japan, moving northeast near the city of Kakegawa at a speed of 45 kilometers per hour and packing winds of up to 216 kph.

A typhoon that slammed into Japan earlier this month had left about 90 people dead or missing. (ANI)
