Chennai, Sep 20 (ANI): Prominent social activist Medha Patkar on Tuesday praised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for taking up the cause of nuclear plant protesters with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Patkar said it was heartening to notice that Jayalalithaa had shown sensitivity to the people's sentiments by writing to Dr. Singh.
"It is heartening to notice that the chief minister (Jayalalithaa), a woman herself, has shown sensitivity to the people's sentiments and has finally written to the Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) and has agreed to send an all-party delegation to the Central Government," Patkar told reporters in Chennai.
"She (Jayalalithaa) has asked the Centre to stop the (construction) work at nuclear plant's unit 01 and (unit) 02 at Koodankulam. Welcoming these decisions, which are conveyed probably also on phone, everyone would obviously expect that the same comes out in a form of resolution or a written statement and reaches out to the people, who are fasting," she added.
Patkar also alleged that there was non-transparency and non-accountability, especially in the nuclear regime, in the country.
"There is unlimited non-transparency and non-accountability, especially in the case of nuclear regime. The people are now asserting their right to life, livelihood and also to information and participation in the planning and monitoring of the projects" she said.
Meanwhile, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, V Narayanaswamy, has reached to meet the residents agitating against the set up of the Koodankulam Nuclear power project in Tamil Nadu and request them to end their stir.
The local population and fishermen in and around Koodankulam have been protesting against the project. Around 100 persons are sitting on an indefinite fast for the past nine days, demanding the scrapping of the project.
Protesters fear that a Fukushima type of situation could be repeated in the coastal town in case of tsunami or an earthquake. (ANI)
