Dubai, Sep 30 (IANS) Leading United Arab Emirates-based real estate developer Limitless has awarded the contract for the first phase of the $11-billion Arabian Canal mega-project here to Tristar Contract and Contracting.

According to the contract, worth $2.1 billion, the Abu Dhabi-headquartered Tristar will carry out the first phase of earthworks for the 75-km-long canal, which will turn the arid land mass adjoining the Jebel Ali port to the south of this city into an island.

The contract involves removing more than 200 million cubic metres of earth - to be reused to form new landscapes, including valleys and hills upto 200 metres high - along a nine-kilometre stretch of the waterway's route, according to a Limitless statement.

'Construction of our 75-km Arabian Canal is a mammoth task, so we are splitting the earthworks into around 10 different packages,' Ian Raine, project director for Arabian Canal, said in the statement.

'Tristar will work on phase one, and the tender for the second phase will be released shortly,' he added.

Upto 150 metres wide and six metres deep, the canal will be one of the world's longest man-made canal.

The excavation of the canal will start near the Dubai Marina area flowing inland around the massive area for the upcoming Dubai World Central International Airport and wind its way to enter the sea once again at the outer end of Palm Jebel Ali, one of the series of palm-shaped artificial islands off the coast of Dubai.

The Arabian Canal is but one part of the overall $61-billion project that Limitless is developing in the area.

A $50-billion, 14,000-hectare waterfront city for 2.5 million people is being planned along the 30-km inland stretch of the canal.

The first phase of the development will cover 2,200 hectares and will accommodate 600,000 people.
