Pak police claims progress in abduction cases of US national Weinstein, Taseer

Lahore, Thu, 15 Sep 2011 ANI

Lahore, Sept 15(ANI): The Lahore city police have claimed progress in the abduction cases of Shahbaz Taseer and Dr Warren Weinstein, but refused to share the latest developments with the media.

Shahbaz, the son of slain former Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, was abducted at gunpoint by unknown men in broad daylight from Lahore's Gulburg area on August 26, whereas Weinstein, a development expert from the United States, was abducted on August 13 when unidentified gunmen, posing as neighbours offering food, pistol-whipped him and his driver and tied up his guards before whisking him away.

Deputy Inspector General (Investigation) Ali Aamir Malik said at a news conference that the joint investigation team was working day and night over the two high profile abduction cases, the Dawn reports.

Responding to a question about the involvement of militant groups in Weinstein's abduction, Malik said that he was not aware of any such information.

He also said that he had no knowledge whether the US embassy was engaged in talks with militants over the release of Weinstein.

About the Shahbaz Taseer case, Malik said that the police does not have any evidence to ascertain whether Taseer was still in Lahore or taken outside the city. (ANI)
