Washington, Sept 15(ANI): American diplomats claimed to have tracked down Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's third son, Saadi Gaddafi and detained him under house arrest.
"Our understanding is, like the others, he's being detained in a state guest house. It's essentially a house arrest in this government facility, is our understanding," US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
However, their claim contrasts strongly with Saadi's well-guarded luxury hideout, Villa Verde in Niamey, which seems more of a playboy's dwelling rather than a prison, the Telegraph reports.iger has given warm welcome to Colonel Gaddafi's associates, since the country owes its prosperity partly to Libyan investment.
Gaddafi had showered the Niger with gifts, including aiding the construction of a main mosque and a tarred road in Niamey.
Niger Justice Minister and government spokesperson Marou Amadou said the country is facing dilemma due to Gaddafi's associates taking refuge in the country.
"We don't know if they will stay in the long term because we did not invite them. But remember Libya is a country at war so we cannot throw them back," Aamdou said.
"At the same time we will uphold international obligations not to allow anyone subject to a travel ban to leave to another country. So they are stuck," he added, referring to Saddi, who has been subjected to travel ban by the UN sanctions committee. (ANI)
