Religious fair, cultural carnival commences in Haldwani
Haldwani (Uttarakhand), Sep.10 (ANI): Residents of Haldwani, Uttarakhand, participated in the annual Nanda Devi Fair, the cultural carnival that is of immense religious and cultural significance and symbolises the economic and cultural prosperity of the region.
The fair commenced on September 9.
The cultural extravaganza is held in honour of two goddesses, Nanda and Sunanda. . The fair is held all across Uttarakhand including Almora, Nainital, Ranikhet and other districts.
"The Nanda-Sunanda fair is being celebrated since the last 108 years in Nainital. The cultural heritage behind this festival, the traditional values of this festival need to be carried forward in the most authentic manner. The artists in this festival showcase the traditional heritage of this festival that can be passed on from generation to generation," said Lalit Tiwari, Secretary, Organising Committee, Nanda Devi Fair.
People travelled far and wide to witness and participate in the procession, where thousands of devotees carry the dola (palanquin) of goddess Nanda Devi.
A common sight was devotees dancing to religious tunes and shouting slogans.
According to Indian traditions, the Nanda Devi fair is said to have begun in the 16th century during the reign of Kalyan Chand in the Kumaon region. The fair at Nanda Devi is an important one as it has economic implications as well.(ANI)
