New Delhi, Sep 3(ANI): Suspected Maoists killed a villager, Sunil Mandal, in Bihar's Banka district after he refused to join them.
The villagers claimed that the Maoists have been forcing them to join their organizations and have even threatened them of dire consequences if they refuse.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of 35 men carrying wooden sticks came to Dhadhar Jor village on Friday night and asked Sunil to join them.
However, when he refused, the Maoist rebels beat him to death.
"They took him to a room in the village and threatened to kill him and asked him if he will abide by the Maoist party, but he said that he would die but not join their party," said Ramjit Mandal, brother of the deceased.
Meanwhile, the local police, after prima facie evidence, touted it to be a case of gang wars between villagers, but said that the villagers claimed the attackers to have alliances with Maoist organizations.
"At night, local residents from nearby areas came in a group carrying wooden sticks and fought with the people and killed one man," said Rajesh Kumar Mandal, Station House Officer (SHO), Katoria police station.
"They may be the local residents, as of now we have not got any evidence that says they were Maoists. But villagers say that they belonged to the Maoist organizations," he added.
Many villagers have reportedly fled from the place following continued pressure from the Maoist rebels to join them. (ANI)
