Nation tense over uneasiness in Maharashtra

New Delhi, Wed, 13 Feb 2008 Binita Tiwari

There is uneasiness in the life of Maharashtra; Raj Thackeray’s arrest has become the thump of the tense nation. There are disgruntled souls marching on the roads of Mumbai, the soul that is wretched for fearing their ethnicity to north Indians.

The clash between Raj’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the migrant of North Indians has become one of the most inflated issues. The incident showing in the news channel where people were beaten black and blue, where car were smashed.

The insecurity of the particular group who went on to rampage can be justified but not the violence inflicted to the migrants of north Indians.

Though the police and government listened the moans of the victims but the manner they behaved was a clear picture that they the listened to the mute version of the violence meted out to the roadside vendors and taxi drivers.

The situation has turned more offensive over the possible arrest of MNS Chief Raj Thackeray and SP leader Abu Azmi on the charges of inciting riots and violence.

The arrest has become inevitable after the police filed cases against the two leaders under non bailable offences. Though the police and government are silent over when he will be arrested. But the presence of para-military forces sent by centres and the security measures across the whole state gives an indication that they are likely to be arrested on Wednesday.

But since there is a silent support among Maharashtrian for Raj Thackeray, his arrest is likely to create uproar and reaction.

The debate is high and hot as is it really a problem of ethnicity divide or is it a problem which is politically motivated? Is it a law and order problem? What a party like MNS can do which has no mass support?

Definitely he will survive on these political gimmicks but till when? Till when he can divert the Maharashtrian who have been supporting MNS without a concrete issue?

Time to come will make things clear, but regionalism which is also called as sub nationalism is taking a monstrous shape something like Frankenstein monster if not controlled will take the whole nation in its swipe, the nation which has few decades back has learned to walk.
