Gilchrist has retirement plans, will continue with test matches

New Delhi, Fri, 01 Jun 2007 Nadeem Bhat

June 01: This year’s hero, Adam Gilchrist, who blasted his opponents in the Cricket World Cup, has been reported as considering his retirement from One Day Internationals ODI. All of it has happened too soon and much to the surprise of thousands of his fans. Gilchrist scored a ton in his last ODI game and that contributed to a good extent in the victory of Australian team.

Gilchrist has played 90 Tests since 1999 and scored 5,353 runs including 17 centuries. His ODI stats have been impressive with 9,038 runs, including 15 centuries in 268 ODIs.

Adam Gilchrist, the vice captain of Australia, in a recent conversation said, “In the last 12 months, I had never been a guy to consider phasing out one form of the game and just focusing on one." He added "But I am open to think about that now. I have been quite firm on playing both forms in the past, but I guess that things have changed a little.

The left handed batting sensation was keen to prolong his test career and cited this to be one of the reasons for giving it a thought.
Gilchrist said, “When a few of the guys started retiring last year, it made me stop and reflect on where I personally stand he added “while the appetite is still very strong to keep playing, I've just noticed the hunger and the drive for Test cricket that guys like Warney (Shane Warne) and Justin Langer had when they didn't have One-day cricket to consider."

The birth of his third child and the demanding cricket schedule prompted Gilchrist to consider playing only tests. He wants to strike the balance in his personal and professional life by devoting some time to himself so that he can extract most out of it.

"That's not to say that I am announcing right now that I am retiring from One-day cricket, but it's just that I am more open-minded about the issue these days."

However Gilchrist is keen to play newly launched shorter versions of one day cricket and is likely to take part in upcoming twenty20 world cup. There is every possibility that the Indian tour to Australia may feature Gilchrist for the last time in ODI.

It seems quite uncertain that Gilchrist will continue after the Australian summer season."There is a lot of cricket coming up over the next three years, so there are things to consider, said Gilchrist.

Australia is set to play 20 test matches in the upcoming year and the challenge for them now will be to maintain their dominance in the test cricket. With the retirement of Warne, Langer, Glenn McGrath and Damien Martyn, it is not an easy job to maintain and sustain as unbeaten.

"The trick will be to manage the workload in consultation with the captain, the selectors and Cricket Australia," Gilchrist said.
