New UN resolution not constructive: Iran

Gulf-Middle East, Mon, 06 Oct 2008 IANS

Tehran, Sep 27 (Xinhua) Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili Saturday said the new UN Security Council resolution, aimed at reaffirming the existing sanctions against the country, is not constructive and 'won't help keep global peace and security', Iranian state-run TV reported.

'What we need today is to do something to attract the trust of Iranians, not to cause further mistrust,' Jalili was quoted as saying.

He said the new resolution is more like a declaration rather than a resolution, which aims to prove that there is cohesion among the powers over Iran's nuclear issue.

Representatives from the US, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany Friday agreed to submit a draft resolution to the UN Security Council reaffirming the existing sanctions on Iran.

The US and its allies have accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons, but Iran insists that its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad shrugged off the international sanctions threat Thursday saying: 'Whatever they do, Iran will continue its activities. Sanctions are not important.'

'The era of such threats has ended,' he told at a news conference.

Iran till now has been under three UN sanctions over its disputed nuclear programme.
