Planning Commission to discuss growth targets for 12th five-year plan

New Delhi, Sat, 20 Aug 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Aug.20 (ANI): The Planning Commission will meet here on Saturday to discuss the growth targets for the 12th Five-Year plan.

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will chair the meeting.

Talking to reporters, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said the current fiscal is likely to see an eight percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth, as against 8.5 percent during the previous year.

He said one of the key issues in the approach paper to the 12th plan will be the effective implementation of programmes with transparency and accountability.

Ahluwalia was quoted by All India Radio, as saying that the agriculture sector has performed better in the 11th plan, but the four percent growth rate target in this sector can not be achieved.

He said, water will be one of the main issues, besides other important sectors like energy and employment generation.

Ahluwalia also expressed concern over excess exploitation of ground water.

He predicted that India will be the third largest economy in the next 20 years after China and the United States. (ANI)
